Fitness FAQs

Am I too old to workout?

No.  Muscle hypertrophy, or gain, can be achieved at any age and should be even more a part of your life to prevent osteoporosis by way of weight bearing exercises. Also, strength training helps to keep muscles strong so your joints aren’t stressing as much.

When should I eat carbs, proteins, and fats?

For the average person, certain amounts of all 3 should be eaten at every meal.  Try to stick to complex carbs like brown rice and multi grain stuff for your carbs. Eat healthy nuts, avocados, and fish for fats and protein. And for  protein, eat lean meat and fish, tofu, and nuts.  Remember to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch, and a pauper for dinner.  More (carbs) are needed at the start of your day as your car would need gas before a trip.  Later, we maintain and nibble at the end of the day(lean meats, tofu, veggies) and shouldn’t be eaten late if you are not OUT AND ABOUT burning them off!

How long should I work out to achieve results?

Studies show that  a minimum of 30 minutes a day of heart rate elevating activity is required 7 days a week.  That being said, too much is also no good as one can overtrain and burnout.

Should I be doing only one form of exercise?

Absolutely not! Spice up your health life a bit by incorporating resistance training, aerobic, yoga, pilates, swimming, etc, to your program.  You have to confuse the muscle to get any kind of reaction and, like anything, too much of one thing builds tolerance.  Therefore, blend your styles and intensity levels to try and spark new growth!

How soon before I start seeing results?

Every BODY is different and will react differently.  What you put into it is what you will get out of it. If you work out everyday and eat McDonalds for lunch, chances are your progress may be hindered a bit.  A steady loss of a pound and a half to two a week is a good goal and will keep the weight off without losing too much at once.  A “yo yo” effect on your weight then occurs due to muscle loss if too much weight is dropped at one time.

Will females get too muscular if they lift weights?

No.  For that to happen, she would have to be lifting mega heavy weight combined with enhancement supplements.  Fact is, the female body just does not produce the level of testosterone men do  (men produce 10x more on average) and, therefore, will not get “huge”.  Some women never experience the wonders of resistance training due to these fears.  Once they do, they never look back!

Can men benefit from boot camp when they’re used to old school lifting?

Yes! Try something different men…you may be quite surprised. As we get older, less importance should be placed on lifting super heavy and more emphasis on reps, form, and core building.  In addition, you need to be in good condition so work the heart and lungs by doing some aerobic exercises along with your weights.
